My response would be "maybe not".
For most candles, if your hand fits into the vessel, the cold wick tip can simply be pinched off and discarded. You will have to wash the black off your fingers and not get it on your clothes.
But for deeper vessels where your fingers can’t comfortably reach, that’s when a wick trimmer becomes genuinely useful.
